Amid the summer travel boom, the Guangzhou Street Hong Kong Street area within Hengdian World Studios in Jinhua, Zhejiang province, has emerged as a hotspot for its nostalgic aesthetics of the Republic of China period (1912-49) and Hong Kong-style scenes.
Crowds of tourists have been flocking to the scenic area in recent days — seniors reliving the old days, families exploring film culture, and young travelers wearing qipao or traditional gowns for photos and videos.
The scenic area offers Cantonese snacks, themed family photos, and Republic of China-period costumes that transform visitors into "characters" for photos in front of neon signs and other iconic scenes of that period.
According to an official at the scenic area, it receives over 5,000 visits every day, with nighttime tourists accounting for 60 percent. To enhance visitor experience, it has added song and dance performances and water stunt shows while offering discounted packages like parent-child tickets and annual night tour passes.
Originally built in 1996 for the movie The Opium War's scenes of Guangzhou and Hong Kong around 1840, the area now blends film culture with tourism.
It boasts 12 film-themed hotels and homestays and over 70 restaurants and bars, transforming daytime shooting locations into nighttime consumption scenarios and achieving great economic benefits.
